Apply: make legal team handoffs reliable

Use a matter handoff, decision brief, or review queue that carries context, authority, validation status, ownership, and unresolved risk.

Build the team workflow

Matter intake

Capture the client objective, issue, jurisdiction, deadlines, source set, confidentiality boundary, and consequence level before work is assigned.

Handoff and review

Transfer the work with the next action, evidence trail, open questions, reviewer, and approval state visible to the receiver.

Decision brief

Summarize options, assumptions, authority, recommendation, residual risk, and the person accountable for the decision.

Controls and review thresholds

  • Low consequence: internal organization may use a single reviewer and light evidence, but matter access remains controlled.
  • Medium consequence: client-facing work or cross-team recommendations require a named validator, source-backed assumptions, and explicit unresolved issues.
  • High consequence: filings, material client advice, or external commitments require independent verification and Prepared By, Validated By, and Approved By roles.

Practice output

Complete a Matter Handoff Integrity Packet before transfer. The receiver should be able to act safely without chasing the author for intent, sources, missing dependencies, or review status.

Approved-use boundaries

Use approved systems, matter workspaces, access roles, and retention rules. Never treat AI-generated fluency as validation. Escalate privilege, confidentiality, conflict, authority, or client-impact questions before the work moves.
