Understanding the 6 Levels of AI Maturity

AI maturity is not about how many tools you use; it is about how deeply AI is integrated into your judgment and workflows. Our AI maturity model defines six distinct levels that help you identify where you are and what you need to do next.

Why a Maturity Model Matters

Without a clear maturity model, AI adoption is often haphazard. People jump into complex "integrations" before they have basic "validation" habits. A maturity model provides the diagnostic signals needed to move forward with confidence.

The 6 Levels of AI Augmentation Maturity

Level 1: Aware

Signal: "I read about AI and know it matters, but I haven't started using it in my work yet."

Focus: Understanding the terminology and the broad potential of AI-augmentation.

Level 2: Exploring

Signal: "I'm occasionally using AI tools for simple, isolated tasks like drafting an email."

Focus: Low-stakes experimentation and finding where AI might fit into daily work.

Level 3: Experimenting

Signal: "I have a few repeatable prompts and I'm starting to check the results more carefully."

Focus: Developing basic validation habits and identifying repeatable patterns.

Level 4: Integrating

Signal: "AI is part of my normal workflow, and I have a defined process for review and validation."

Focus: Workflow integration, reliability, and consistent output quality.

Level 5: Leading

Signal: "I coach others on how to use AI effectively and help them build their own validation routines."

Focus: Shared language, team-wide workflow, and cultural transformation.

Level 6: Augmenting

Signal: "AI has fundamentally changed how the work is organized, and validation is built into the system."

Focus: Systemic augmentation, new operating models, and sustained capability.

How to Move to the Next Level

Progressing through the AI maturity model requires more than just time; it requires a deliberate shift in how you validate AI output and how you organize your workflow. Each level builds upon the habits established in the previous one.
